I2C GPS Interface Board

Description

The goal of the Geeknight I2C/GPS Interface Board was to make GPS navigation as friendly as possible and make it accessible to higher level robotic frameworks like PICAXE® , Basic Stamp®, Lego Mindstorms® and other microprocessors which need to offload intensive processing like GPS. What sets this board apart is the user's ability to pass in a destination Lat/Long coordinate and have the module send back a destination bearing and/or distance. This greatly simplifies the handling of large floating point numbers and trig functions needing precision to 6 decimal places or more.

  • Allows the user to input a destination co-ordinate; the unit will calculate the bearing and distance away.
  • Provides an I2C interface to the USGlobalSat GPS engine
  • Handles the tricky high precision, floating point math needed for bearing and distance calculations
  • Has a standard header pin interface instead of awkward surface mount connectors like the SM06B-SRSS-TB(LF)(SN)
  • Takes care of the voltage level shifting needed by the 3.3 volt TTL serial input/output.
  • Offloads the constant serial communications processing needed for the data coming out of the GPS engine.
  • Parses and interprets the variable length NMEA messages to extract the useful information.
  • Frees up your microprocessor’s serial communications pin to do other fun things like send debug messages to your PC terminal.
  • Enables the more accurate WAAS by default

For GPS navigation, the interface module makes an excellent companion to the Devantech® CMPS03 I2C-based electronic compass. You can find out more about this product at:
